The first is that I'd made it just a bit too small to get everything I like to carry. The other is that I'd used a brass blue-jeans zipper, and it never worked smoothly. Over the weekend, the zipper simply locked up; I had to tear the bag open (although I could still sorta use it), so I resolved to make another. </p><p>Having the old bag, I could use it as a pattern. I made the shaped sides about 3/8" longer. The sides are held together by a long, narrow rectangle of fabric. On the first one, I made that 1" wide plus the seam allowances; this time I raised that to 1 1/2". And I had a plastic zipper in the drawer that hadn't been used on a project that I thought better of before I'd actually bought the fabric for it.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhohuQAg6anoxJaHuY2MP6sRKKD4_tkvEYx70ZcGQCp4wxa6rQekvu4BsCvgr3koL989zsfPKOXrFYbzV5CI_E0sziNxMmu6xgPQWhJzbzeX7FiyDmX1YEMVGpX8Q0KPk_UWnzEhYJNvS683jJbFXpGBdl8S95gIoO9sKfGfHveixWV3ZNIVODba8yoAQ/s2272/DSCN1162.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1704" data-original-width="2272" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhohuQAg6anoxJaHuY2MP6sRKKD4_tkvEYx70ZcGQCp4wxa6rQekvu4BsCvgr3koL989zsfPKOXrFYbzV5CI_E0sziNxMmu6xgPQWhJzbzeX7FiyDmX1YEMVGpX8Q0KPk_UWnzEhYJNvS683jJbFXpGBdl8S95gIoO9sKfGfHveixWV3ZNIVODba8yoAQ/s320/DSCN1162.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p>Above, from lower left: one side cut apart with the zipper installed, the other side for the new bag; the side of the old bag that I'd used as a pattern. It includes a chain tool and spoke wrenches, as well as the Allen keys, screwdrivers, and a common Torx size, but the Allen keys and screwdrivers are sometimes too short. When somebody finds a multi tool that includes all this stuff, with regulation length screwdrivers and such, that is NOT made by Silca or some other bicycle jewelry company, I'll get one.</li><li>A CO<sub>2</sub> cartridge.</li><li>A box from a tire patch kit, that actually contains quick links for 9- and 10-speed chains (I know from experience that I can use a 10-speed link to repair an 11-speed chain). I've used 'em twice for others who have broken chains <i>en route</i>. (I find tire patch kits are useless at roadside, despite the many recommendations. Use 'em if you're doing self-supported touring; otherwise, use Uber. YMMV.)</li><li>Another CO<sub>2</sub> cartridge.</li><li><a href="https://ride.lezyne.com/products/1-tl-alloy-v1hd06" target="_blank">Lezyne aluminum tire levers</a>. There's a story in it.)</li></ul><p> <i>NOT</i> in the bag are two tubes (shown), a set of Allen keys, and some tire boots.</p><p>I like this bag way better than the old one. </p><p>*Tire Glider. It's worked sometimes, and the theory is great, but the notch that the wheel wall goes into when the tire is being replaced is too tight for some wheels. I've recently come across the <a href="https://www.tru-tension.com/product/tire-monkey-tire-lever/" target="_blank">Tire Monkey</a>, with a wider notch for the wheel wall, and generally beefier construction overall. I've not used it yet, but I have high hopes. (Your best bet might still be the <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Kool-Stop-Tire-Bead-Jack/dp/B001AYML7K" target="_blank">Kool Stop Tire Jack</a>. I've got two. For the <i>really</i> reluctant tire, I've used the Tire Glider to keep the bead from falling off with my left hand, and the Kool Stop jack to force the tire on with my right. I was making up the route as I went, with sort-of the intention of coming back across the Griggstown Causeway.</p><p>About fourteen miles in, though, I was flagged down by John W, who stopped to chat for a bit. In passing, he mentioned that the canal was flooded. I had noticed that the water was high when I came across at Blackwells Mills, but I <i>had</i> been able to cross... so I presumed he meant at Griggstown, which is more prone to flood.</p><p>I turned around to go back to cross at Blackwells Mills. I'd thought I was still that height, but I'm not.</p><p>Over the past two weeks, I've lowered my saddle height by 10mm. Today, with no carbs for breakfast (just a couple hard-boiled eggs, and the quart-and-a-half of coffee I have every day), I turned in <a href="https://ridewithgps.com/trips/114550563" target="_blank">this ride:</a></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhq61ia4_x88SgpOxuNMYIeA0Hqhrh4Ihm1_5Upl5tW65UmNQdksVCwFD3qxW_BrSRPgKMMLOthdBOy6F5WKyDiLEHU1C1m6FA8StjgA51vdq34639MlB1yRFVnglmhjewCD72CeiZwi_mUv7f2qFP9m0ERMmvAEzrS3BsBRG3AeTo_9ioPbu4dL8OMpA/s1385/lowered%20saddle%20ride.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="914" data-original-width="1385" height="211" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhq61ia4_x88SgpOxuNMYIeA0Hqhrh4Ihm1_5Upl5tW65UmNQdksVCwFD3qxW_BrSRPgKMMLOthdBOy6F5WKyDiLEHU1C1m6FA8StjgA51vdq34639MlB1yRFVnglmhjewCD72CeiZwi_mUv7f2qFP9m0ERMmvAEzrS3BsBRG3AeTo_9ioPbu4dL8OMpA/s320/lowered%20saddle%20ride.png" width="320" /></a></div><p></p><p>Holy bananas; 15.6 average. We're trying to have me live off only my Social Security, leaving my retirement savings (and my two laughably small pensions) for after my wife retires in a few more years. </p><p>Now, last year, I wound up with several thousand dollars in unexpected dental expenses, so I was hoping to make up for that this year. But during the week, the car started running rough, and the "check engine" light was on, and the display screen would only show warnings. So I limped into the dealership.</p><p>Diagnostics determined that rodents had gotten into the engine, and had chewed up wiring, hoses, the engine covering, and other impedimenta in there to the tune of another several thousand dollars. This additional expense just sent me into a tailspin. It's not enough that it affects my retirement; I have the savings to pay it... but all I could see was an endless line of upcoming expenses for which I could not plan and had not budgeted. Rumination and overthinking took over. The anxiety disorder (to which I've alluded in <a href="http://seemingverb.blogspot.com/2023/02/not-for-its-intended-purpose.html" target="_blank">other posts</a>) came to visit, and unpacked as for a long stay.</p><p>I almost always post rides for Sundays on the <a href="https://www.princetonfreewheelers.com/content.aspx?page_id=4001&club_id=15353" target="_blank">club website</a>, and I posted a ride for today... but a friend pointed out that the route I'd posted didn't correspond with the description I'd put in. I hastily corrected the route info, and emailed the five registrants that the route would be different, and would have substantially more climb (one registrant cancelled).</p><p>I'm blaming my confusion and poor focus on the earlier events, and my poor mental health. <br /></p><p>But I still got ten other riders for today, including two who decided to meet along the route.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-45vjROwWVNnTi6G8CGLc8DKVLdXHW7e4t5PIflXNWHhZRcq_Ctj9WKc2hefhay_09KsmFqF4mFvcuUAGUHR5S8CMS3bdt0yURP6v84YmMCOAHS68dopf6d-jQI2n8tfvxuuMD5tUUmeprnfv9z7ukjLOqdPsKcD7J-O51naBA8eejBv6gTWIeUIrlw/s2272/DSCN1107.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1704" data-original-width="2272" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-45vjROwWVNnTi6G8CGLc8DKVLdXHW7e4t5PIflXNWHhZRcq_Ctj9WKc2hefhay_09KsmFqF4mFvcuUAGUHR5S8CMS3bdt0yURP6v84YmMCOAHS68dopf6d-jQI2n8tfvxuuMD5tUUmeprnfv9z7ukjLOqdPsKcD7J-O51naBA8eejBv6gTWIeUIrlw/s320/DSCN1107.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjx9a7eGB-bXkl-KAfJQa3roslHIwRTBaP6TjUlxJ6P09OlE9aPqlrua2XI9xta-cHRePXtlE-5pQeKYs7HnZNz-UjfTi64zt0Ivkr5FlvfwZCK814sUJBedq8JnhaU5a_5kF4ehPytV4DuzKyH0RYjmgqyPlgEBXhcKJJUo5ANDXgwtbwT5UwYoZHrhg/s2272/DSCN1108.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1704" data-original-width="2272" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjx9a7eGB-bXkl-KAfJQa3roslHIwRTBaP6TjUlxJ6P09OlE9aPqlrua2XI9xta-cHRePXtlE-5pQeKYs7HnZNz-UjfTi64zt0Ivkr5FlvfwZCK814sUJBedq8JnhaU5a_5kF4ehPytV4DuzKyH0RYjmgqyPlgEBXhcKJJUo5ANDXgwtbwT5UwYoZHrhg/s320/DSCN1108.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhICXgUGpC3-Tm_ojXU0d_J2LJaU8lDE-AGTWPx1BrswQmez_LLl7EzCXutNF9mihvL_3rzVFcx6kUlLYyjrGNlkoGtb1lBf8DQKUv2cRoaNpwTEvrUxoUU2OPRCh3QMSjmnRdEY-303lJ0XhV8NzSlwzO4Hg6CHsN5UZdpDM-fpOPRKADBG5IZLqTKvA/s2272/DSCN1109.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1704" data-original-width="2272" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhICXgUGpC3-Tm_ojXU0d_J2LJaU8lDE-AGTWPx1BrswQmez_LLl7EzCXutNF9mihvL_3rzVFcx6kUlLYyjrGNlkoGtb1lBf8DQKUv2cRoaNpwTEvrUxoUU2OPRCh3QMSjmnRdEY-303lJ0XhV8NzSlwzO4Hg6CHsN5UZdpDM-fpOPRKADBG5IZLqTKvA/s320/DSCN1109.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdvPuU06ytJkd66hueDFvjxzxuufnYNj0F-8s-oj1oSuk1QuffpvuoaQOwgKqiJ1SnxYf1bzVIVkdYZCfo-CQTYKFDE16AM_QhOoYmzgw4w9tM17QopMJJz_Q2Dk2kNJAcqWh_pOx0CdOVJOaLKAOC4YkB-Piu_to9Wc0ESVJYv2mxW7riYW8Loa6wyA/s2272/DSCN1110.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1704" data-original-width="2272" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdvPuU06ytJkd66hueDFvjxzxuufnYNj0F-8s-oj1oSuk1QuffpvuoaQOwgKqiJ1SnxYf1bzVIVkdYZCfo-CQTYKFDE16AM_QhOoYmzgw4w9tM17QopMJJz_Q2Dk2kNJAcqWh_pOx0CdOVJOaLKAOC4YkB-Piu_to9Wc0ESVJYv2mxW7riYW8Loa6wyA/s320/DSCN1110.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p>Many of my readers are bike-y people, and I won't need to tell you what a salutary effect 39 miles at a reasonable pace can have on the troubled mind. that post was <i>eleven years ago</i>) and as a <a href="http://seemingverb.blogspot.com/2022/11/comiing-out-as-mental-health-client.html" target="_blank">person with a mental health disorder</a>.<p></p><p>I do daily exercise, and, if I'm exercising in the house, I listen to podcasts. During the pandemic isolation, the <a href="https://homecooking.show" target="_blank"><i>Home Cooking</i> podcast, from Samin Nosrat and Hrishikesh Hirway</a>, was running (and they did two Thanksgiving episodes thereafter).</p><p>I'm never going to be much of a cook, but I treasured this podcast. I found Samin's voice, and her laugh, and the interaction between her and Hrishi, soothing and comforting.</p><p>I'd save up these episodes for particularly bad days. Much of my anxiety was work-related, so after I retired, I didn't need the soothing as much, and I had two episodes I hadn't listened to yet.</p><p>This week was pretty bad (I may do a post about that), and I played one of the remaining episodes today. It still worked as I remembered. My mind is better. And there's one more in the can, and I've still got all the other episodes I can replay, if I need.</p><p>Ms Nosrat will probably never know (or, likely, care) how helpful she's been. But this podcast saved me on some of my darkest days. </p><p>I do a daily (well, more-or-less) discipline about remembering what to be grateful for and what I need to focus on each day. Today, this podcast is going on the gratitude column.<br /></p>Plain_Jimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13583521087605958816noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-824897432452100424.post-70488859525805305492023-02-19T20:46:00.003-05:002023-02-19T20:46:56.538-05:00just about right<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgc20yX9R387uSRbRdWJtC2VJXsyBteJ5LXvC-UiNJIiLneeVA24rYKdY-NO2DBmpXFq1-ppNXsxB-eQ8HMn4LRRIXGx-tbpPNwQc_uboZ9f0UsV-wHB9-8jJq4eoYOcFHWFxqanmUTKC2kzJV9UpwakIM0jo5GYZjsc6Xiy4eAg2-irpMxn0Jp_7OZ8Q/s2272/DSCN1104.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1704" data-original-width="2272" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgc20yX9R387uSRbRdWJtC2VJXsyBteJ5LXvC-UiNJIiLneeVA24rYKdY-NO2DBmpXFq1-ppNXsxB-eQ8HMn4LRRIXGx-tbpPNwQc_uboZ9f0UsV-wHB9-8jJq4eoYOcFHWFxqanmUTKC2kzJV9UpwakIM0jo5GYZjsc6Xiy4eAg2-irpMxn0Jp_7OZ8Q/s320/DSCN1104.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><p></p><p>Sometimes, the ride just comes together: the route, the day, the company. Decades ago, I worked with a woman (it's all I can do not to say "I worked with a girl..."; while she had the age to be a woman, she had attitude and irresponsibility I associate with girlhood) who had a suit consisting of a frock coat and flared pants. I have low-key wanted a coat like that ever since (it's basically a blazer with a knee-length lower hem). I've made four of 'em: neither of the first two was worth saving and are now banished from the house; I wore the third to an event over the weekend (and yes, I was a little overdressed for the event).</p><p>The last time I was in the fabric store, I saw some lovely suiting fabric, and decided I just had to try the frock coat again. Laura <a href="http://perpetualheadwinds.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">OLPH</a> was rooting for purple with contrasting piping, but the ghosts of my WASP ancestors put their foot RIGHT down on that suggestion (I'm sure we'd find my homophobe father would be turning in his grave at the whole idea of my sewing at all ["No son of mine..."], if there were enough of him left to know he'd turned, but he was cremated, and how would you know if his ashes were restless?), but I did go for bright salmon lining in bridal satin, <i>q.v.</i> in the picture above. </p><p>That's the bodice lining. It took me most of two days to assemble (although I don't work eight hours a day on it), partly because the original pattern doesn't include the inside pockets, which I had to design, cut parts for, and let into the pieces (a terrible, but unfortunately true riddle: Q: What's a man's blazer without inside pockets? A: A woman's blazer). I cut the pieces for jacket, lining, pockets, and all on Saturday, and between pressing, layout, and cutting, it took about five hours (I'm sure someone who knows what they're doing can cut it in less than half that).</p><p>The lining fabric is bridal satin, which is just a joy to work with; it's got body (unlike many thin lining fabrics) and stays pressed. The cut edges were shedding like crazy, but it's a polyester, so I figured that if I singed the edges, the fraying would stop. That worked a treat, but don't let the fabric catch fire when you're using the lighter. <br /></p><p>The bodice lining includes the upper collar, and I was getting tired and cranky by the time I was putting that on; I had to cut the stitches and reassemble a number of times, which tells me it's time to quit for a while.</p><p>Next is the outer bodice, which should take a little less time (all the pieces are in the pattern, and I've made a few mistakes I can avoid on the outer, which is one of the reasons I do the lining first). And then the sleeves. Assembling the sleeve pieces is straightforward, but fitting them to the bodice (both the lining and the outer) requires attention: the sleeves are larger than the arm holes they go into, and the technique for fitting the sleeves is <i>not </i>forgiving. (You could have seen several ways to do it wrong on the ones I threw out.)</p><p>I've done enough of this stuff to know that when I finally get to the point that the lining and the outer are assembled, I'm only about 60% finished; there is a large amount of special finishing and hemming, and eleven or thirteen buttons to go on. I expect it to be complete in about a month.</p><p>For no reason, below find the side of the lining that will be hidden, showing the guts of the inside pockets:</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUTh5zHSvtOuEaOBI2tlGPQw6FXd-DMLYC6XhUh-Hnvisy_7y0ovixvexBI6oviOYxTWSiMu2XRoaCD07cFeVBkcv8xU5GZkOxzDbercKtLLbwwrZt4dsjqMGdSd7izzsVZFxsi7fdtvtu8_4veZDT7e65luvM8yHLTmLxMrSxlaymGrf00PPflTNBSg/s2272/DSCN1051%5B1%5D.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1704" data-original-width="2272" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUTh5zHSvtOuEaOBI2tlGPQw6FXd-DMLYC6XhUh-Hnvisy_7y0ovixvexBI6oviOYxTWSiMu2XRoaCD07cFeVBkcv8xU5GZkOxzDbercKtLLbwwrZt4dsjqMGdSd7izzsVZFxsi7fdtvtu8_4veZDT7e65luvM8yHLTmLxMrSxlaymGrf00PPflTNBSg/s320/DSCN1051%5B1%5D.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p>Since I make 'em to suit myself, they're each large enough to hold either my oversized wallet or my cell phone.</p><p>No, I won't make one for anybody else. But I'm not an expert with that, or with training, or fitness (although I <a href="https://ramblinwrench.com/" target="_blank">claim a certain proficiency with a wrench [see my Ramblin' Wrench site</a>], and another rider mentioned a plan to bespeak my services again).</p><p>(I can never remember where we are; I had to go look at the <a href="https://ridewithgps.com/trips/112270053" target="_blank">ride page</a> to get the road name.)</p><p>We took a scheduled break at Boro Bean. The proprietor-fella said that he'd had the busiest day today that he'd ever had, although there were still a few things on offer (I got a contact from a fellow Free Wheeler saying that she'd had breakfast there with a houseguest, but had been sure to leave some muffins behind). One of our number got the last of the brownies, leaving another pining for its loss... and then he noticed that the signs were reversed: the (empty) brownie array was listed for chocolate-chip cookies, and the supply of chocolate-chip cookies was labeled as brownies. We had a certain amount of banter (and eye-rolling on the part of Very Truly Yours, Plain Jim), leading ultimately to the second obscure reference in Eric's title for this ride.</p><p>And back. If anything, the rest of the riders were energized after the break, and I mostly let 'em go on ahead (I started the group on 518 to the east, and when they all started to pass me after a bit, I confess a certain amount of relief). By the end, I thanked a couple of 'em for letting me make believe I could keep up with 'em. Albert laughed and said he thought I was pretty fast.</p><p>Hrmph. I'm not fast. They're polite. <a href="https://ridewithgps.com/trips/112270053" target="_blank">See the ride page</a>. I'm sure all of their averages were faster than mine. I need some more sensible people to come on this ride to keep me company. <br /></p>Plain_Jimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13583521087605958816noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-824897432452100424.post-54463520925042078072023-01-28T15:12:00.001-05:002023-01-28T15:12:18.901-05:00almost missed it<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKse75GChBr7TwpvKhTT7ONZ1HNOG8uvUiO_aCjKu-dn3EceTs48xrXuabifVkIfyOi9gGZ1XhLQPapSNH2caIQQB0IwRxu8_3P990lbNh_v_q9YMbi8pGidNfzaSYa6kzKseWtZPcDIf0klfgXk9_p2hHxxFZTZzZV3XtpCvqYoQnvKiUfODwkkTcdA/s2272/DSCN1022.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1704" data-original-width="2272" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKse75GChBr7TwpvKhTT7ONZ1HNOG8uvUiO_aCjKu-dn3EceTs48xrXuabifVkIfyOi9gGZ1XhLQPapSNH2caIQQB0IwRxu8_3P990lbNh_v_q9YMbi8pGidNfzaSYa6kzKseWtZPcDIf0klfgXk9_p2hHxxFZTZzZV3XtpCvqYoQnvKiUfODwkkTcdA/s320/DSCN1022.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><p><br /><a href="http://frisket.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Tom H</a> posted the listing for this ride on Tuesday, and sent an email around to his regulars in the Insane Bike Posse, but I put it off... and by the time I got my act together to sign up on Thursday evening, the ten allotted spots were full. I recognized a number of the roads [and I'm lost <i>all the time</i>]). You can see the route on the <a href="https://ridewithgps.com/trips/112188449">ride page</a>.<p></p><p>The first bit was easy going: it was flattish (except for a dip on Hoffman Station Road), and, despite our different preferred paces, we mostly stayed together. I rode mostly in the back, chatting with riders and listening to others spout off facts and opinions, except for occasionally taking a turn in the wind... which was beginning to pick up as we turned south and west.</p><p>We stopped at a Wawa on 33 near Manalapan, where I got an even worse picture of Bob L...</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjz-tPTN6mTiD4GfslId9y4MOQZBFiHenhqdX_znh9lKBZ5sb8EHjTlUrYHP0ppvn8UOpGJwqjkciY_GXd4rrc7k6R7zax_gGUCoCzrLKPVW2FzrkyRAtb_S9Qen-eWGV1ZLBJ25DQ5oroN2CMcST88uWBkc5zJaihhunkZjxkv8fJmD-JlldpA-fzV3g/s2272/DSCN1024.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1704" data-original-width="2272" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjz-tPTN6mTiD4GfslId9y4MOQZBFiHenhqdX_znh9lKBZ5sb8EHjTlUrYHP0ppvn8UOpGJwqjkciY_GXd4rrc7k6R7zax_gGUCoCzrLKPVW2FzrkyRAtb_S9Qen-eWGV1ZLBJ25DQ5oroN2CMcST88uWBkc5zJaihhunkZjxkv8fJmD-JlldpA-fzV3g/s320/DSCN1024.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p>(I swear he's better-looking than that), as well as other pictures of other riders that were even worse, and weren't worth posting. (Bob is likely to say that the one just above <i>also</i> wasn't worth posting.)</p><p>We got started again, and the wind had found its style by this time. Tom mentioned that all of the climb on this ride was after the break, but the climb alone was not the issue; the climb plus the headwind made the ride back memorable. Twice, a rider who is registered for a ride I'm planning to lead tomorrow reminded me to call off the headwind for my ride, and I guiltily remembered that I hadn't ticked that box when I'd put in the weather order. Oh, well...</p><p>The group got separated a few times on the way back. I got ahead with the fast group at one point, and looked around for Tom and didn't see him, so waited for the main group to catch up; for the rest of the ride, I made sure to keep an eye on Tom (less out of any concern for him, and more because I've noticed that if you stick with the ride leader, your chances of making it back to the start location are above the 90th percentile. The strategy worked again).</p><p>So, unlike most Tom rides, no closed roads or bridges to cross on this one. I guess the headwind will have to do.<br /></p><p><br /></p><p></p>Plain_Jimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13583521087605958816noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-824897432452100424.post-86246986330518601152023-01-25T20:51:00.002-05:002023-01-25T20:51:46.018-05:00new cycling jersey<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaAD4OqKFv7yBhI05MlWZtcZ3eYxja87dyEbNRHGV478_wDZqyxhZFc6RPN31p_R-Vp78oxJ8xXKiWPsiCLrdxJDxMUp_GfvpMPLpRBQv5L1UA9I65taYy_dHs-hghF5aUa9i_aSXOtwQUdJKbvttWhuUR414g3Oioh11vQhqmuL062ujsVI94O2vx_g/s2272/DSCN0998%5B1%5D.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1704" data-original-width="2272" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaAD4OqKFv7yBhI05MlWZtcZ3eYxja87dyEbNRHGV478_wDZqyxhZFc6RPN31p_R-Vp78oxJ8xXKiWPsiCLrdxJDxMUp_GfvpMPLpRBQv5L1UA9I65taYy_dHs-hghF5aUa9i_aSXOtwQUdJKbvttWhuUR414g3Oioh11vQhqmuL062ujsVI94O2vx_g/s320/DSCN0998%5B1%5D.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><p></p><p>It's a shame I look like a dentist in scrubs in that picture, because that jersey pattern came out well, and is probably one or two iterations away from what I really want.</p><p>Yeah, I'm working on making my own jerseys. I'm not paying for the good ones, and I don't like the fit of the cheap ones, and I don't like the zippers. I'm never gonna pull down that zipper; keeping my scrawny, grey-haired chest covered is a spiritual work of mercy and a service to the community. <br /></p><p>The fit is good; the pockets are deep in back without being so high at the waist that it's hard to reach into 'em. The fabric is sweat-wicking, and a good weight: not heavy, not too flimsy.</p><p>Regular readers know that I started sewing during the pandemic. When you start sewing, you wind up making an awful lot of stuff that turns out to be only good for rags. This is probably my tenth jersey, and I only have one other that I'd actually wear. I made two for fellow club members, but those had zippers in, and for the zippers and for other reasons, I'm not really happy with those.</p><p>There are a couple of more details I need to work on. But expect to see that seafoam jersey when then weather warms. (I might try a long-sleeve version next...)</p><p>On Facebook, I saw ads for this <a href="https://oceanandsan.com/" target="_blank">Ocean & San</a>;
one of their slogans is "Looks like a shirt; rides like a jersey" (they
use a comma instead of the semicolon, but don't worry; I corrected
'em). That's kind of the vibe I think I'm going for. It's recently come home to me that almost nobody I ride with or hang around with has the same ideas about bikes, cycling, or accessories as I do. Oh, well. <br /></p>Plain_Jimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13583521087605958816noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-824897432452100424.post-12407018184759174632023-01-24T09:10:00.000-05:002023-01-24T09:10:11.085-05:00bbc on why i'm always lost<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlIWxpzX_xMlyZsJZDqmjActkAiuKjDxmTak1Lzxbyzlo0HbvHidDJyCu3RJgGLakjTEppz3o_cAw89cxI4wyqvDIR_judYW8W7oRBXk0utanDzo5lusxRVZGUQx7XVmEb_cxHqs60z6lqApLaQ6pHmE-QL8VPJMJbpCBJwzEEoasan6eN2co_k_OD0A/s343/handsum.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="100" data-original-width="343" height="93" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlIWxpzX_xMlyZsJZDqmjActkAiuKjDxmTak1Lzxbyzlo0HbvHidDJyCu3RJgGLakjTEppz3o_cAw89cxI4wyqvDIR_judYW8W7oRBXk0utanDzo5lusxRVZGUQx7XVmEb_cxHqs60z6lqApLaQ6pHmE-QL8VPJMJbpCBJwzEEoasan6eN2co_k_OD0A/s320/handsum.gif" width="320" /></a></div><br /> See article on <a href="https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20230112-why-some-people-cant-tell-left-from-right" target="_blank">why people can't tell right from left</a>.<p></p><p>Apparently, it's as common as one in six.<br /></p>Plain_Jimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13583521087605958816noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-824897432452100424.post-11674986718337699762023-01-22T17:19:00.001-05:002023-01-22T17:19:33.039-05:00so many riders on a cold day<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_iDcSCIBz6YtqsJ4DXew-VuxiDb8EsBgJ6S4BbTyjS8yTbTsDJMm5etw7K2DjpN3fS9lV_R8Evr3CDTJcDMCoRWiYt-9rx36ZaFg8SGadHJxzrJYNJtNs81Pw-mbfvPHFzUYoKoYLcDyjpwc1g_4J3nti9ICzk5crhLHHq62ORXfudBPgOf_knAMjjw/s2272/DSCN0983.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1704" data-original-width="2272" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_iDcSCIBz6YtqsJ4DXew-VuxiDb8EsBgJ6S4BbTyjS8yTbTsDJMm5etw7K2DjpN3fS9lV_R8Evr3CDTJcDMCoRWiYt-9rx36ZaFg8SGadHJxzrJYNJtNs81Pw-mbfvPHFzUYoKoYLcDyjpwc1g_4J3nti9ICzk5crhLHHq62ORXfudBPgOf_knAMjjw/s320/DSCN0983.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><p></p><p style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: x-small;">Laura <a href="http://perpetualheadwinds.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">OLPH</a> displays her gaily-decorated left leg while standing on her staid black right one (another product from <a href="https://www.runningfunky.com/custom-half-and-half-tights/" target="_blank">Running Funky</a>), as Ralph tries to hide behind Dr Z.</span></p><p style="text-align: left;">I didn't list this ride until late Thursday, because the earlier weather prediction was for rain to start just as we were struggling up that annoying hill on East Mountain Avenue, at the furthest point of the ride. I'd shortened the route because the week before, we'd run into traffic at the end, and it was suggested that was because of the late (10am) start and the slower pace (I managed that for myself by stretching my two-mile ride-in to seven miles). There <i>was</i> less traffic, and none of the riders complained about the abbreviated distance (see the results on the <a href="https://ridewithgps.com/trips/111773346" target="_blank">ride page</a>).</p><p>Riders were better than I'd expected about keeping to the pace (we mostly stayed together; we broke into faster and slower groups on some occasions, but people I expected to be fast were largely staying with the group, and riders I expected to be slower were often in the middle of the peloton).</p><p>We stopped at Thomas Sweet in Montgomery, and took over the inside.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1bPBsTpm8fgji8pn1-KMpEvIIVi56lIDCCJc3VPQaZLGjGAw9StPBTZ2JNWjDMu7kK-b7Lj5p670o5rIRa0n0cNinHRg7FZTYNfZLYi8img9rY8ALO_NDtMVuF6oC6idhoBzwB3P1z1fjqVXCnGZngpQasT_0MnJFHV24BN75RGVdoWfTBFZNVkHZTg/s2272/DSCN0987.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1704" data-original-width="2272" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1bPBsTpm8fgji8pn1-KMpEvIIVi56lIDCCJc3VPQaZLGjGAw9StPBTZ2JNWjDMu7kK-b7Lj5p670o5rIRa0n0cNinHRg7FZTYNfZLYi8img9rY8ALO_NDtMVuF6oC6idhoBzwB3P1z1fjqVXCnGZngpQasT_0MnJFHV24BN75RGVdoWfTBFZNVkHZTg/s320/DSCN0987.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlrVgWIunOATEXqyRY1vnhvkhsfIh87yTso5456LbIIQYB0096rqxkuDjdPL6ICCY1DgFjo94RIDVn3zkVWoMSV6BMTPpLMXE9XouucpvVMhh5G8T-jZ7QDoHcAsCoj4rpIMWyRpwlbmokp6bxxoWnA_w46fyr7JSMLrRqVhZGEI617XzTlxoFJHFNJQ/s2272/DSCN0989.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1704" data-original-width="2272" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlrVgWIunOATEXqyRY1vnhvkhsfIh87yTso5456LbIIQYB0096rqxkuDjdPL6ICCY1DgFjo94RIDVn3zkVWoMSV6BMTPpLMXE9XouucpvVMhh5G8T-jZ7QDoHcAsCoj4rpIMWyRpwlbmokp6bxxoWnA_w46fyr7JSMLrRqVhZGEI617XzTlxoFJHFNJQ/s320/DSCN0989.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgaC25roXQ7KJ-C-BJil4Hgoo14RsJZK72t6vIDxhc-7ukk3MJ0JwSLR1bzsQrtmmwfG0MDToZq0BX0fUvvvFWs5GbmoVT7AhWPsJ2rqd3wz51JApB5iW4wXkKj3OOpfCtzbetazRwDkT-Zwo6F4pnnkftryMLi2Mu4MFwIKN6aXY6pC4aU2OG2MuS09g/s2272/DSCN0990.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1704" data-original-width="2272" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgaC25roXQ7KJ-C-BJil4Hgoo14RsJZK72t6vIDxhc-7ukk3MJ0JwSLR1bzsQrtmmwfG0MDToZq0BX0fUvvvFWs5GbmoVT7AhWPsJ2rqd3wz51JApB5iW4wXkKj3OOpfCtzbetazRwDkT-Zwo6F4pnnkftryMLi2Mu4MFwIKN6aXY6pC4aU2OG2MuS09g/s320/DSCN0990.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3ZT13U12KW_UufY7GlBmNHr7CCZaTnggwuF6Kb0yY5AKP7iZJx6gQ_vokI95uqWBoilWadNbScy9ZQXl0-iUn5L2qp7SgxjIdLdKHoEC4jE6UY2bHKtRvn7IsQYgg9CIVzrp72bfDMuAw1NsOcRaUXFQS-a4GWggQXI2-G5PmE2nx-Vb-45rqHgSg7A/s2272/DSCN0992.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1704" data-original-width="2272" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3ZT13U12KW_UufY7GlBmNHr7CCZaTnggwuF6Kb0yY5AKP7iZJx6gQ_vokI95uqWBoilWadNbScy9ZQXl0-iUn5L2qp7SgxjIdLdKHoEC4jE6UY2bHKtRvn7IsQYgg9CIVzrp72bfDMuAw1NsOcRaUXFQS-a4GWggQXI2-G5PmE2nx-Vb-45rqHgSg7A/s320/DSCN0992.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><p></p><p>We got riding again before we got <i>too</i> comfortable (it was tough getting started again!), and did the ten-miles-or-so back to the start. In the interview, she mentioned that she had a female partner, and the interviewer said that he had a gay child.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Z9tixGwIa3g" width="320" youtube-src-id="Z9tixGwIa3g"></iframe></div><p></p><p>In the video, she argues that people in what she calls "left wing" media* were also biased (for example, they apparently didn't want to hear facts that contradicted their world view), and that we should be open to the views of people with whom we disagree.</p><p>Except the people with whom I disagree want to eliminate people like her; refuse to admit they have valid lives; presume that they are grooming children to take up their lifestyle. They refuse to admit the humanity of some people, sometimes going so far as to call for their elimination -- or killing them outright.</p><p>Somebody else is going to have to be fair to these people with whom I so vehemently disagree. I don't have the stomach for it.</p><hr /><p></p><p>*I'm led to believe it's NPR. I will agree their editorial opinion leans left (it's certainly not "left wing" enough for me!); their reporting, however, is fact-based. </p><p><br /></p> Plain_Jimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13583521087605958816noreply@blogger.com0
