down the shore

That "holy kickstand" video isn't as good as the one I wasn't able to upload from a few weeks ago, but you do what you can. That was the start to Tom H's Sandy Hook ride. Some of the posse:

We started out from Monmouth Battlefield, right near where the Battlefield Orchard was to have apple- and pumpkin-picking later... but more on that anon. We rode through downtown Freehold, which wasn't pleasant, but later got to the more bike-friendly roads. And then to the shore towns, and this path along the water.

We decided to add a bit to the stretch up Sandy Hook.

On the way back, we got caught at a drawbridge, raised to allow a high-masted sailboat through. Ming was so taken bu the experience that I didn't have the heart to let my cranky exasperation show.

And back. As we got by the Battlefield Orchard, traffic was backed up and barely moving (remember the apple-picking?). Laura, Bob, and Ricky, who had ridden in from Ricky's house, had rolled off, as had the newbie (to us) Eric... so Luis, Tom, Ming, and I, dodging passenger-side mirrors with our elbows, rolled past the mostly-stopped traffic, and finally got back to the cars. It was hairy, but no damage, either to life or property, was sustained.

And Tom's planned 45-to-52 miles turned out to be 69, by the time I got back to the car.
