So it's the last Sunday of the month, and I'm doing a C+ ride. My last two C+ rides have come in at just below 13mph, so let that be a guide.
Also, The Excellent Wife (TEW) is planning to come, and I'm not leaving her in the dust again; it gets BAD when I do that.
The route will look like this one, except that starts and ends at Six-Mile Blackwells Mills, and that's too crowded for a start. We'll start at Claremont School, 175 Claremont Road in Franklin, at 8:30. (I haven't nailed down the exact route yet.) Stop at Boro Bean in Hopewell. Sorry about the long out-and-back, but I'm trying to avoid hills AND have a little variety. 35-ish miles overall (maybe a smidge less). EDIT AUG 28 NOONISH: The real route is this one.
The porta-potty at Claremont School is gone. There's reasonable privacy for the courageous, but make your own choices. Ahem.
We'll be at Six-Mile Blackwells Mills about 8:45, and can pick people up there, or along the route elsewhere. Please let me know if you want to do that; my email is available at the original ride listing on the Freewheelers site.
Regular club rules and special COVID-19 rules apply. We're all at different points about coronavirus precautions. Please try to act with concern for the person who's a little more cautious than you are.
You must register; no registrants, no ride. I hope to see some of the folks I haven't seen in the heat and humidity. (I also hope to see some regulars; please don't feel slighted if I didn't specifically include you.)

ride for 8/23
Yeah, so I didn't get it together to list a ride last week until late, and there were no registrants, and then we got rained out anyway. Let's try again. More-or-less the same route as a month ago (it probably won't be exactly that, but it'll be close), 35-ish miles; 8:30 start at the Claremont School, 175 Claremont Road in Franklin. Lots of parking. Porta-potty is gone, but if you're discrete and not too fussy... (I've been scouting out a few other porta-potties. What is wrong with me that I've taken on this particular project?)
About 8:45-9 I expect we'll pass the Blackwells Mills/Six Mile lot, so we can pick you up there, or other places along the route. Let me know if you want to do it that way, and where you're gonna be.
Plan on a stop at the Thomas Sweet. We'll go by the site of the shuttered Philly Pretzel Factory; I may need a moment to shed a tear. You can get a pale substitute pretzel at the Wawa, but it's nowhere near as good. (They were the emptiest of empty calories, so I needed to be on a ride to justify 'em. There's one more source I know of, but I don't ride out of Bordentown that frequently...)
The usual club rules and special COVID-19 rules apply. I'll have your phone and emergency numbers when you register, so we can avoid the sign-in-sheet awkwardness.
Plan on the usual Plain Jim low B pace (Al P's C+ rides are faster than my B rides). Registration required; if there are no registrants, I'm gonna go bother somebody else. But I do hope to see you.

ride for 8/16
With the iffy weather predictions, I wasn't sure I wanted to post a ride, and this one is going up late, and there's a lot of competition, so I may not get anybody... but I'm posting this one anyway. We'll do 35-or-so from the Claremont School, 175 Claremont Road in Frnaklin, on a route that looks a lot like the one I did about a month ago. Start at 8:30.
The porta-potty that had been at the school was gone last week. You've been warned.
We'll be passing the parking lot at Blackwells Mills/Six Mile Run at 8:45-9; riders-in can hook up there (or anywhere along the route, but let me know to expect you).
We'll stop at the Thomas Sweet unless the weather suggests a stop at the Wawa is a better idea. Neither has toilets available, so we'll arrange those as we can.
Usual club rules and special COVID-19 rules apply. If you haven't ridden with me before, send me your cell and emergency numbers so I can pre-print the sign-in sheet and we can avoid making you sign (and transgressing the whole social-distance thing) don't bother, I figured out how to make the questions mandatory..
Usual Plain Jim Low-B pace, although there will be places to sprint. Nobody dropped. There are faster rides listed for the day, if this doesn't interest you.
Registration required. If there are no registrants, I'll go do something else.
Edit: Bad weather cancels. Don't sign up if the weather is bad.

ride for august 9
Start at 8:30 from Claremont School, 175 Claremont Road, Franklin, NJ 08823. We'll do 40-45 miles down to Princeton, then to Hopewell (with stop there), then Montgomery & Skillman.
If you want to ride in and meet us, we'll be passing the Griggstown Firehouse 8:45-9, maybe. Route here.
Regular club rules and COVID-19 rules apply. As I posted last time, we're all at different points on the coronavirus concern web. Try to act with a care for the person who's a bit more concerned than you are. Masks will be expected to be used at the start and at stops when not eating or drinking.
Pre-registration required. If I don't know you, email me your cell phone and emergency numbers; I'll pre-print them on the sheet and save the sign-in awkwardness.
There's been a porta-potty at the school, and we'll be passing a few. We'll likely stop at Boro Bean, who has had their toilet open (but if it's wicked hot we can stop at the convenience store instead).
Hope to see some of youse.

ride for july 26
It's the last Sunday of the month, so it's time for another of those nobody-dropped C+ rides.
After the last one, The Excellent Wife (TEW) dropped hints that she might come along again. Who knows? Maybe you want to nudge her along into coming, by suggesting you'll come if she does.
Start at 8:30 at the Claremont School, 175 Claremont Road, Franklin. Lots of parking; porta-potty in back (reasonably clean). About 20 minutes later, more or less, we should be passing the Blackwells Mills/Six Mile lot near 625 Canal Road in Franklin, if you want us to pick you up there.
Please register if you plan to come out, and let me know where you intend to start with us. I had no registrants last week, so I cancelled the ride. I'm hoping the no-registrants thing was because of the heat, rather than my upsetting people. (There is no bottom to my insecurity, especially in view of my sometimes-unpopular opinions.) Pre-registrants are pre-printed on the sign-in, so we don't have to do that passing-of-the-pen ballet.
Last time I did one of these, the average was 12.6mph, so let that be a guide.
32-ish miles. Route here. A few annoying hills, but I've avoided the worst of 'em (trust me; I ride these roads often enough to know where they are). We'll do a side trip through the old Epileptics Village. Plan to stop at Bessie Grover Park and at the Thomas Sweet in Montgomery (they have coffee and snacks, but the toilets aren't available yet).
Usual PFW rules apply, as well as special COVID-19 rules. As I suggested last week, everybody's at different points on the defense-against-COVID-19 web. Try to act with a thought to a person who's being one degree more cautious than you are.
Hope to see some of youse, especially if I haven't seen youse in a while. (And maybe contact TEW, will youse?)

ride for july 19 2020
I'd rather go to Sourland Coffee... but they're not doing food yet, and no place to sit. So we'll do a 40-ish mile loop that passes the Boro Bean.
This is, of course, a Princeton Freewheelers club ride, subject to club rules and COVID-19 special rules. Wear your masks when stopped. Everybody's got a different idea of what's safe and appropriate; wherever you are on that scale, be careful for the person that's one notch more concerned than you are.
Start at 8:30 at the Claremont School, 175 Claremont Road in Franklin. There's parking for a gazillion cars and a porta-potty out back (at least, there has been for weeks). We'll be passing the Griggstown Canal Road Firehouse about fifteen minutes after that, so we can pick you up there. (Or we can pick you up anywhere along the route; that's been working for a couple folks.)
If you pre-register, and I have your numbers in my list, you won't have to sign the sheet; if I don't have your cell and emergency numbers, email 'em to me (my email is visible to members on the ride listing page) and I'll put 'em on the ride sheet.
Limited to ten including me. Route here.
What am I forgetting?

ride for july 12
When I looked at the weather for Sunday, it was iffy, so I wasn't going to post anything... but now it looks sunny-but-windy, so let's try to get a ride in.
My Thomas Sweet in Montgomery is open for drinks and some other stuff, so I want to stop there. They probably will NOT have toilets open. We'll manage.
Route to look something like this.
Start at 8:30 from Claremont School, 175 Claremont Road, Franklin. There's been a reasonably-clean porta-potty in back for weeks.
We'll be passing the Blackwells Mills lot about 15-20 minutes later, if you want to meet us there.
Usual Plain Jim Lo-B pace (Prem's doin' a B+ out of Cranbury if you want a faster one).
Princeton Freewheelers club ride. Usual rules and COVID-19 special rules apply.
Limited to ten; signup required (I know the web magic to do it, so there).
Hope to see some of youse.

ride for 7/5
We'll start at 8:30 am from the Claremont School, 175 Claremont Road, Franklin. There was a porta-potty in back last week. Lots of parking; easy to social-distance.
Some folks who ride in don't like to go all the way there, so about 15-20 minutes later I expect we'll be passing the Griggstown Firehouse on Canal Road. If you want to meet us there, we'll pick you up, but I expect you to register anyway.
Princeton Freewheeler club ride at the usual Lo-B pace (I'll be on the heavy Krakow Monster), subject to the usual club rules and the special coronavirus rules.
More-or-less this route. We can stop at the Boro Bean, but you might want to bring snacks.

c+ ride for june 28 2020
It's the last Sunday of the month, so I'm scheduling a ride at a C+ pace.
I still think the Blackwells Mills/Six Mile lot is too busy (and there's no porta-potty there, last I looked), so I'm planning to start again at the Claremont School, 175 Claremont Road in Franklin (08823). There was a porta-potty in the back the last time I looked, and there are outdoor places with some privacy for those off-put by the porta-potty. And we seem to be the only people who use the lot.
More-or-less this route, same as last time, although we'll go a bit slower. We can stop at Vet's Park in Montgomery, where the restrooms were unlocked last week, and at the little park at Camp Meeting Road. I do not expect to stop at a store; bring food and drink.
This is a Princeton Freewheelers Club Ride, subject to the usual club rules, and the special coronavirus rules (social distancing, and wear your masks at stops unless you're eating). I'll probably have the list pre-printed so all you'll have to do is sign; you can bring your own pen, or you can have me sign for you. Because I know the special web magic to do it, I'm limiting to ten; please sign up.
Start at 8:30; it's gonna be hot.

ride for june 14
OK, let's try this again. Starting again from the Claremont School (Blackwells Mills/Six Mile was still barricaded last time I passed; also, remember no toilets at Claremont School). Sunday, June 14, 9am.
Pre-registration is required. Space limited to ten. I'll have the list pre-printed, and you can bring your own pen, or I will sign for you.
In addition to the usual club rules, COVID-19 rules apply. Riders will be expected to have masks (I'm gonna check), and to use them at the start or on breaks except when eating. Social distancing and 10' between riders will be expected (what's that, about three meters in real money?).
Probable route (a little longer & hillier than last week). I'll plan to stop at Camp Meeting Road, about halfway; bring your own food. I expect the usual Plain Jim lo-B pace. Nobody dropped, but if you're off the front, I might cut youse off.
Porta-potties have been removed from the usual sites. We'll plan to stop when you need to.
Keep an eye on the weather; if there's a serious threat of rain, I'll cancel. Hope to see some of youse.
Edit 6/11/20: The Excellent Wife (TEW) tells me that the lot at Blackwells Mills/Six Mile is open again. Tough; I'm starting at the Claremont School anyway. quod scripsi, scripsi.

ride for june 7
OK. I'm planning to do a Princeton Freewheelers Club Ride on June 7, starting at 9am.
First, this ride will be subject to the current COVID-19 club rules. That means having face coverings, limits on the number of riders, and keeping your distance. I'm limiting this ride to ten riders, and pre-registration isexpected required.
As far as signing the sheet: if you've been out with me, and you pre-register, it's likely I'll have your information pre-printed on the sheet. You'll only have to sign. You can bring your own pen, or you can have me sign for you if you'd like.
We will be starting from the Claremont School, 175 Claremont Road, Franklin, NJ. The last time I was at Blackwells Mills, the lots looked like this:
We are NOT gettin' in to park there.
There are no toilets at the Claremont School. I expect we will pass a couple of porta-potties, but some folks would rather not use them, due to fears of the surfaces, or the quality of the air inside. I will plan to stop if people want to respond to (ahem) renal emergencies on the ride (I respect that you might not want our full attention at the time!). If you DO choose to use the porta-potties, this article from the New York Times suggests that you can greatly reduce your exposure to the virus by flapping the door vigorously a few times.
We will also not stop at a store for a break. I will stop at about mile 20 on this 30-mile ride for a break at Veteran's Park in Montgomery. Bring your own sustenance.
Probable route.
9am start. I hope to see a few of you.

ride for march 14
Yeah, well, that ride I WANTED to do on Sunday, I'm doing Saturday.
The description is the same: Back to one of my first routes (more or less this one, with the annoying hills, although I don't plan to do that climb on Burnt Hill that was such an unpleasant surprise), Stop at Thomas Sweet. 36-ish miles; nobody dropped (except me, if recent experience is to be trusted). Places to sprint if you wanna.
Princeton Freewheelers ride, club rules apply. Start at 9:30 at Blackwells Mills/Six Mile lot; location linked from the club calendar listing. Parking lot is starting to fill up when I'm ready to leave; maybe you want to get there a bit early in case you have to use one of the overflow lots.
Link to listing on Freewheelers ride calendar.
Come out and do something with a low COVID-19 risk!

sunday ride on saturday 3/7
Through a series of missed communications and schedule conflicts, it works out better for a few of The Usual Suspects if I move my usual Sunday ride to Saturday for this weekend.
Other than the change of the day, it will be what you've come to expect from a Plain Jim ride; I expect that we'll turn in the usual low-B pace; it will be a Princeton Freewheelers ride under the club rules (especially the "don't ride like a jerk" rule); I expect the usual conversation, gossip, and bad jokes will be in evidence.
We'll go to the Pig, along a route that may be something like this.
Start at 9:30, March 7, 2020, at the Blackwells Mills/Six Mile lot. The address they give is 625 Canal Road in Franklin, but the map works out better if I put in 643 Canal Road.
If you've been missing the ride because of church conflicts, this is your chance to see what the heathens do on Sundays.

no plain jim ride for march 1
I'm not listing a ride for March 1... but Laura OLPH might list a D&R Canal Towpath ride. Keep an eye on the ride calendar.
If she lists, it will likely be a "no registrants, no ride" listing, so don't wait until the last minute to make up your mind.
I'll plan to list another ride when the temperature is less gelid. Hope to see youse then.

ride for feb 23
I want to get back on my plan to lead a C+ ride (13.0-14.9mph) on the last Sunday of the month, so if my usual rides have been just that little bit too quick, come on out for this one. I've shaved off the worst of the hills and shortened the route a bit.
Start at 9:30 on Feb 23 at Blackwells Mills/Six Mile lot on Canal Road near Blackwells Mills Road. Route will look something like this. We'll stop at Boro Bean so I can get my loyalty card validated.
Princeton Freewheeler ride, so club rules apply; non-members get one free; then you gotta join.
Hope to see you, especially if you haven't been out on my faster rides, or if I haven't seen you since fall. (And if you pre-register, I pre-print your info on the ride sheet. How much more welcome can I make you?)

So if we leave at 9:30 and head down to Princeton before heading back up to Hopewell, the traffic on Rosedale Road shouldn't be too bad, right? And we can cut into ETS before Carter Road.
I'm ambivalent about that stretch along Pretty Brook that I've been doing the last few times. Rosedale has one long downhill and uphill, and, if nothing else, it's variety from the up-and-down-and-up-and-down on Pretty Brook.
Anyway, 38-ish miles, leaving Blackwells Mills/Six Mile at 9:30; more or less this route. I'm still avoiding that climb up to Mount Rose (unless youse piss me off; I can always change things mid-pedalstroke). The elevation is the same the way I go, but the climbs are shallower.
We'll stop at Boro Bean (I'll probably get another endorsement on my loyalty card).
Hope to see youse. Did you see that you can now cancel your registration right from the ride page? No more of that Byzantine process I had to describe on the Freewheeler page (but don't cancel; I'd like to see you!).
Princeton Freewheelers Club ride; rules apply. Non-members get one free; then you're expected to join. ($25/year. Cheap date. We listed over 850 rides last year; where you gonna find a deal like that?)
If you pre-register before I print the ride sheet, you get your info pre-printed! Won't that make you feel special?
(I gotta get a life...)

ride for feb 9 2020
Time to do another ride to the Pig. The way there will look mostly like this route, but the way back won't; I had a credible complaint about Hamilton Ave in Princeton, so we'll try something else. 45-50 miles.
Start at 10am at the Blackwells Mills/Six Mile Run lot (local address is 625 Canal Road in Franklin, but the map shows better at about 643 Canal Road). There's an iffy prediction of rain that will (I hope) have passed by then.
Usual low-B pace, I expect. I get a range of different abilities coming along these days, so we let the quick ones go off the front, and we wait for the ones in the back, OK?

ride for feb 2 2020
A couple of weeks ago, I wanted to do a 36-mile ride over my usual roads, but the snow on the roads made me change the route. Let's try that 36-mile route again this week (probably this one, more or less).
PFW club ride; PFW club rules apply. We usually bring it in at a pace that's so low-B that it looks like a high C+ (need to see the pace table?). Start at 10 at Blackwells Mills/Six Mile Run lot (rain is predicted the day before, so some of the trail riders might not come out if the trail is muddy; there should be parking).
If you pre-register, I can pre-print your info on the ride sheet and all you have to do is sign (am I the only one who hates filling out ride sheets?), and you'll get a notification if I cancel. I don't intend to do that, but who knows?
Hope to see youse. (I had nine last week. I'm as surprised as you!)

ride for jan 26 2020
I tried to set a precedent of doing C+ rides on the last Sunday of the month, but I did a C+ route last week, and I don't think my C+ folks are gonna come out in the weather. If you want me to lead a C+ ride, contact me and I'll schedule one (weather permitting).
I'm planning to do this route, more or less. It's one of my common routes, but this version avoids Rosedale; I've had enough of the traffic there. Instead, we do Pretty Brook, which is hillier (a lot!) but more pleasant otherwise.
We'll stop at the Boro Bean. Leave Blackwells Mills/Six Mile at 10. If you pre-register, I'll have you on the sign-in sheet and you'll get a notice if I cancel.
Nobody dropped. Pace probably like last time. Princeton Freewheeler club ride; rules apply.
Hope to see some of youse. Sign-up link.
